Eva Mendes has quickly become one of Instagram’s best, most stylish, and simultaneously chaotic posters, joining the ranks of fellow chaos mongers Salma Hayek and January Jones. The actor, who is proving that maybe she should have appeared in her husband Ryan Gosling’s latest movie, Barbie, shared a carousel documenting a look she wore that is made entirely of sponges (from her own sponge brand, Skura Style, natch). Like, these are the type of kitchen sponges I used just this morning to scrub the frying pan that I was too lazy to wash last night after making dinner.
The first post in the carousel is a 2017-style Boomerang in which Mendes pushes her green-rimmed Le Specs sunglasses up and down on her nose. The other pics are still portraits of Mendes in the look. The 49-year-old paired the colorful sponge garment with equally colorful glam and bold accessories. She wore her copper hair in a high half-pony, with an oversized gold chain holding it in place. A pair of gold chandelier earrings completed the clean look, and added an ’80s vibe to the whole thing, which was already very ’80s.
“Oscar lewk? Met Gala? Is this what they mean when they say ‘clean fashion’? Ok, not great, but if you can do better I’ll post yours later today. Whatcha got ?! 💗” Mendes wrote in the post’s caption.

The comments section delivered, with one person calling the look Haute Skuture. Another noted that her children must think she wears this dress all the time, because they’re always wiping their grimy hands on her. Though my favorite is, “Barbie esponja,” Spanish for “Sponge Barbie.” This Barbie is werking, in more ways than one.
Will Eva Mendes take this look to the next Met Gala? Or is she already looking into an outfit for the 2024 Oscars, which she’d better attend alongside Gosling, who’d better be nominated for his performance as Ken in Barbie? If anything, the dress will be great for absorbing the tears Gosling’s opponents when he takes home that golden statue.
