This week Pierpaolo Piccioli took the fashion crowd to Chateau de Chantilly, the magnificent castle north of Paris, for his Valentino autumn-winter 2023 haute couture show. None other than Kaia Gerber opened the show wearing jeans and a white shirt, with shoulder-grazing crystal earrings and silver mules adorned with giant bows. This is couture, so of course the jeans were actually encrusted with tiny micro crystals, and the shirt required weeks and weeks of careful construction.
The model, 21, was photographed leaving Chantilly after the show in the opening look from Valentino’s autumn-winter 2023 ready-to-wear collection. Gerber wore a black thigh-grazing minidress with a halter neckline, which is a quirky spin on a shirt and tie (“black tie” was the theme of the collection).
She styled the dress exactly as it was worn on the runway, with a pair of glossy, chunky square-toe boots—a hint at the boot style everyone will be searching out this coming season. Gerber’s had a thick sole and were fitted at the ankle, making them an ideal choice to toughen up mini hemlines.
Piccioli’s autumn-winter 2023 collection was built around the idea of black tie, and every one of the 73 looks incorporated a collar and tie. “Recently my daughter went into my wardrobe and wore a suit and a tie,” Piccioli told Vogue at the time, referring to 17-year-old Stella. “I asked her why. She said, ‘It’s new for me.’ I said, ‘Why do you like it?’ She said, ‘I don’t know.’ It was just a choice. Not because of punk or disruption. She never saw me wearing a tie. I always wear this [pulling at his hoodie].”
Gerber seems to be in an autumnal mood already, as earlier this week in Paris she was spotted out for dinner with boyfriend Austin Butler in a chocolate maxidress, a black single-breasted coat, and leather ankle boots. Given it is 80 degrees in Paris today, her commitment to boots seems surprising—she clearly can’t wait to get into her autumn-winter 2023 wardrobe.
